Homeland Security Investigations Explorer Post 601
HSI Explorer Post 601 visited the United States Attorney's Office and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York on June 4th and 11th, 2021, to present their mock investigative case to Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Jessica Weigel and Magistrate Honorable Judges Marcia Henry and *.
In February 2021, Explorers were assigned into groups and conducted a full-scale mock investigation, Operation Maze Runner. Each group consisted of a Case Agent, Co-Case Agent, Agents, Evidence Technician, and Intelligence Analyst to test the Explorers for teamwork and responsibilities. Explorers received an initial report from a duty agent and were tasked to find pieces of evidence upon the probable cause for the possibility of a United States Code violation. Ranging from conducting criminal history, firearm, vehicle, and financial statement checks, interviewing individuals and compiling case reports to present to the Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) and Magistrate Judges at the Eastern District of New York, Explorers learned various investigative and interviewing techniques throughout these few months.
Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Jessica Weigel received an appreciation plaque from HSI Explorer Post 601 at the United States' Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn, New York, on June 11th, 2021. The appreciation plaque was for assisting and dedicating her time for the Post during Explorers' presentation of their investigative case and giving the Explorers an insight into a career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA).
Upon accepting a mock investigation case for possible prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Jessica Weigel, Explorers visited the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and presented their case to Magistrate Honorable Judges Marcia Henry and * to request a mock search and arrest warrant. Explorers also gained an insight into a career as Magistrate Judges.
Explorers thank the Post Advisors, Deputy Special Agent in Charge (DSAC) and Post Chairperson Erik Rosenblatt, former Explorers, and everyone involved from the Eastern District of New York for supporting and preparing the case investigation activity. Explorers will finish off the investigation by executing a search and arrest warrant with the assistance of Special Agents from HSI Special Response Team (SRT).
